Catholic Prayers to Teach Your Child

If you want to raise your child as a devout Catholic, start by teaching him common prayers that can be memorized easily. These include Grace Before and After Meal, Guardian Angel Prayers, and Our Father, among others. Children can learn these prayers quickly if you repeat them every day. Here are the Catholic prayers that you should start to teach your child.
Sign of the Cross
This is the most basic of all Catholic prayers but many people don’t see it as a prayer but as a beginning of every prayer. When teaching your child the sign of the cross, see to it that he uses his right hand and not his left. He should also touch his left shoulder first before the right one.
Our Father
This is the prayer that Jesus taught to his disciples. It is also said to be the “summary of the gospel.” It’s imperative that you teach this to your child. This can be recited as a morning prayer before the child goes to school or as an evening prayer before he sleeps. Ensure that your child pronounces the words clearly since many children mispronounce this prayer.
Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary
Teaching your child to pray the Hail Mary reinforces devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mother. It is also a good way to introduce Marian prayers like the Rosary.
Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death. Amen.
Glory Be
This one is very simple and easy to memorize. Glory Be is also an important prayer not only because it’s part of the Rosary but because it can be said at any time of the day to culminate a personal prayer.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Grace Before Meals
Saying Grace before meals is vital to remind not only the children but also the adults the importance of saying thank you for the blessings of food. After all, every good thing that you have comes from God. Grace after meals is equally important.
Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
We give Thee thanks, Almighty God, for all thy benefits, Who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.
Guardian Angel Prayer
Then there’s the Guardian Angel prayer that would enable a child to connect with his guardian angel so he will have the protection he needs every day.
Angel of God, my guardian dear, To whom God’s love commits me here, Ever this day, be at my side, To light and guard, Rule and guide. Amen.
